As part of the survey, we asked the municipalities to tell us what kinds of products or materials they collect in their curbside programs. Because of the large number of materials, we have subdivided the data into two tables. This table displays paper related products (newspapers, office paper, junk mail, magazines, brochures, catalogs and cardboard). The accompanying table displays information concerning data about beverage containers (aluminum cans, steel & tin cans, #1 and # 2 plastic bottles, glass, and whether the programs accepts all bottles). This table includes one additional set of data, we have included a colum for "Other" to capture unique materials accepted for recycling.

We also asked the municipalities whether the resident was required to sort the containers into separate bins, whether like items could be commingled or whether all recyclable material could be commingled into a single stream. This information does not include private haulers, which makes the data set incomplete and this data will be surveyed in the next phase of the research. It should also be noted that many communities that require private haulers to provide or offer curbside recycling did not specify the materials to be collected or whether those materials were to be sorted or commingled. That information will be collected as part of the private provider survey. Conducting a survey of private haulers is difficult. Since private haulers are generally unregulated (except for certain health, labor and safety requirements) there is no single list of haulers that can be used. Each community must be researched individually, and many communities have multiple haulers serving them. Not all haulers serve an entire community, many serve specific neighborhoods as part of their contracts. Trash hauling and associated recycling programs show fairly easy entry and exit in the market because there are low barriers to entry. Turnover among the smaller trash haulers is relatively high, as are the markets that they serve.

As with the general information concerning the availability of curbside recycling programs, many communities provided us with information about drop off options. The communities also provided us with drop off information as part of this data base, and gave us information about sorting and commingling. We opted to include that information in this table since it provides a more complete picture of the recycling options.

The abbreviation "CS" indicates curbside, and the abbreviation "DO" indicates drop off.

Where there is no information, we are still working to verify the arrangement. Please let us know if any of this information is in error or needs updating.
